He first skated during his second school year in Karaganda. Moved to Germany from his native Kazakhstan as a 16-year old with his parents.
His parents were part of the ethnic German minority group in Kazakhstan, but he couldn’t speak a word of German when he came to the country.
He was actually found out by Georg Riedel, president of fifth division club REV Wilhelmshaven, who was looking for Russian teenage players with German ancestry. He found out Blank, Vitalij Aab and Eduard Lewandowski (who had only played bandy).
Not very technical, but a good skater. Always worked hard and played a physical game. Known for his jokes and good mood.
In December 1997 he married Natalia, a youth love he had met in Karaganda where she was a swimming teacher.
Debuted with national team Il a débuté en équipe d'Allemagne in France in April 2001. Scored two goals in his first World Championship game (vs Japan).
Also represented Germany in the 2011 Inline World Hockey Championships. He also likes fishing.
Retired at 40 in 2018 and became a hockey coach. His son Alexander is also an ice hockey player.

Il a patiné pour la première fois dans sa deuxième année de scolarité à Karaganda. Ses parents faisaient partie de la minorité ethnique allemande au Kazakhstan.
Quand il a quitté son Kazakhstan natal pour l'Allemagne à 16 ans avec ses parents, il ne parlait pas un mot d'allemand.
Il a en fait été découvert et "rapatrié" par Georg Riedel, président du club de cinquième division du REV Wilhelmshaven qui cherchait des hockeyeurs adolescents russes éligibles à la nationalité allemande. Il a trouvé Blank, Vitalij Aab et Eduard Lewandowski (ce dernier n'avait joué qu'au bandy).
Pas très technique, mais bon patineur. Il travaillait toujours fort et jouait un jeu physique. Bon esprit dans le vestiaire, amateur de blagues, il savait aussi plaire aux supporters en dansant le kasatchok sur la glace lors de célébrations d'après-match.
En décembre 1997, à 21 ans, il a épousé son amour de jeunesse Natalia, rencontrée à Karaganda où elle enseignait la natation.
Il a débuté en équipe d'Allemagne contre la France à Albertville en avril 2001. Un an plus tard, il a marqué deux buts à son premier match en championnat du monde (contre le Japon).
Il a passé neuf ans à Krefeld (2005-2014) aux côtés de son complice Herberts Vasiljevs, mais a mal vécu sa rétrogradation soudaine en quatrième ligne à sa dernière année.
Il a également porté les couleurs de l'Allemagne lors des Mondiaux 2011 de roller hockey. C'est aussi un amateur de pêche.
Retraité à 40 ans en 2018 et devenu entraîneur. Son fils Alexander joue aussi au hockey sur glace.
