Had a fast shot. Born in Bluesky, AB (Peace River, AB according to his passport) but moved to Ottawa, ON for eight years.
When he was 12 he moved to Montreal, QC and used to play street hockey with Rocket Richard.
A decorated war hero who was shot down during WW II.
Between April 1942 and May 1943 he was a prisoner of war in a German camp (Stalag VIII B).
He managed to escape three times, escaping for good on his third attempt.
Instead of scurrying for safety he joined the Polish underground (Armia Krajowa) for two years in the Carpathian Mountains.
He was one of only five RCAF officers to be awarded the Military Cross.
For his efforts with the Polish underground army he received the Polish Silver Cross of Merit with Swords.
In addition he was awarded the Polish Cross of Valor for leading 40 fellow partisans out of German encirclement.
Spoke many languages. Was a substitute at the 1948 Olympics.
Canadian flag bearer at the Olympics.
Met a Danish woman (Birthe Grontved) during the war in Copenhagen shortly after having been shot down.
He eventually married her during the 1948 Olympics.
Settled in Ottawa after having retired from hockey.
Worked at Ottawa University and died of a heart attack.

Joueur au lancer rapide. Né à Bluesky dans l'Alberta (à Peace River selon son passeport), il est parti à Ottawa à huit ans.
À 12 ans il déménagea à Montreal, QC où il aimait jouer au hockey dans la rue avec Rocket Richard.
Héros de guerre dont l'avion fut abattu lors de la seconde guerre mondiale à sa seconde mission.
Entre avril 1942 et mai 1943 il fut prisonnier de guerre dans les camps allemands (Stalag VIII B).
Il tenta de s'échapper trois fois, y parvenant pour de bon lors de la dernière tentative.
Au lieu de se cacher pour sa sécurité, il rejoignit la résistance polonaise (Armia Krajowa) pendant deux ans dans les montagnes des Carpates.
Il fut l'un des cinq officiers de la RCAF à avoir reçu la Croix Militaire.
Pour ses sacrifices dans l'armée secrète polonaise, il reçut également la Croix d'Argent polonaise du Mérite des Armes.
En plus il fut décoré de la Croix de la Valeur polonaise pour avoir conduit 40 partisans à s'échapper de l'encerclement allemand.
Il parlait plusieurs langues. Remplaçant lors des Jeux Olympiques de 1948.
Porte-drapeau canadien lors de ces Jeux.
Il rencontra une Danoise (Birthe Grontved) durant la guerre à Copenhague peu de temps après avoir été blessé.
Il l'épousa finalement durant ces Jeux de 1948.
Il resta à Ottawa après sa retraite du hockey.
Il travailla à l'Université d'Ottawa et décéda d'une crise cardiaque.
