He started his athletic career as a football player for Traktor Stalingrad and later Torpedo Moscow, winning a Soviet Cup. He in fact appeared in 159 football league games.
In 1949 he went on to play hockey for Krylya Sovetov (Soviet Wings). Bychkov was known for his powerful shot and for being strong-willed. He was a battler, and never backed down from a physical challenge. Unselfish player known to take great defensive responsibility on his lines.
Good at making fast counter attacks by skating along the boards. Played 280 league games, scoring 208 goals. Represented Soviet Union 42 times (14 goals).
Inducted into the Russian Hockey Hall of Fame.

Footballeur de haut niveau jusqu'à ses 23 ans, d'abord au Traktor Stalingrad puis au Torpedo Moscou, avec lequel il gagnera une coupe d'URSS. Il disputera en tout 159 matches officiels de football.
Ce n'est qu'en 1949 qu'il se mettra au hockey sur glace avec les Krylia Sovietov (ailes soviétiques). Bychkov s'y distinguera pour son lancer vigoureux et sa volonté de fer. Combatif, jamais intimidé par l'affrontement physique et altruiste, il prenait d'importantes responsabilités défensives malgré sa vocation offensive.
Spécialisé dans les contre-attaques qu'il menait en filant le long des balustrades, Bychkov a disputé 280 matches de championnat soviétique de hockey, pour 208 buts, et obtenu 42 sélections en équipe d'URSS (14 buts).
Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey russe.
