Ernie Collett

Collett, Ernest John

Position : G

03-03-1895 York, ON, CAN
21-12-1951 Toronto, ON, CAN

He was educated at Wellesley and Jesse Ketchum school and Toronto Technical school. Played for various amateur teams in Toronto his entire playing career, including Toronto Riverside Hockey Club (1915-1917), Toronto Crescents (1917-1918), Toronto Newman Hall (1919-1920) and Toronto Parkdale (1920-1921), before joining the Toronto Granites in 1921.
With the Granites he managed to win the Allan Cup (Canadian senior amateur championship) in 1922 and 1923. He was Canada’s first flagbearer ever at the 1924 Winter Olympics. At the 1924 Olympics he and Jack Cameron shared the goaltending duties for Canada. While Cameron was the cool guy, Collett was more of the nervous type but actually at his best when it mattered most, in pressure situations. Eventually retired in 1926.
After his playing career he worked as a referee in the OHA. He was a tailor by trade and operated his own establishment on Scott Street in Toronto. It was a meeting place for many of the old time hockey followers over the years.
