Kevin Conway

Conway, Kevin "Crusher"

Position : D

27-03-1930 St.Jerome, QC, CAN
08-05-2013 Penticton, BC, CAN

Raised in Van Kleek Hill, Ontario. Gentle, optimistic and cheerful person.
Muscular and tough defenseman who patrolled his blueline with reckless abandon. Colorful and hard-nosed player with great work ethic. Strong at blocking shots. Covered all the angles and body-checked really well. Had a nice shot and was a head's up hockey player. Fine leadership qualities.
He got his nickname "Crusher" when a childhood friend, sent a letter addressed to "Crusher" Conway to the Montreal Jr. Canadiens dressing room where he was playing at the time and Conway had to admit the letter was for him. In the game Conway wound up fighting and when the announcer looked for an interview after the game, the coach urged him to speak with "Crusher" Conway.
After being traded to Vancouver Canucks he had a hockey trunk shipped with most of his belongings to his new hometown. However whoever shipped the trunk painted the letters C-R-U-S-H-E-R on the side. Soon the coaching staff, players and the media picked up on the nickname. The Canucks began marketing the name, "Crusher Conway" to drum up interest in the team.
Scored 277 (81+196) career points in 589 games. Retired in 1960. Coached in hockey for a while. Went on to work for Standard Oil, and ended up owning eight gas stations. Was the owner of Kev Conway's Carmi Chevron and the Dairy Queen and was the first self-serve gas station for Chevron Canada. Later went into condo management.
Best friend of 1955 World Championship teammate Ivan McLelland.
Passed away peacefully on May 8 2013 at the age of 83.
