Helmut De Raaf

De Raaf, Helmut

Position : G

05-11-1961 Neuss, GER

Youth team / club formateur : Neusser SC

His father played football but little Helmut liked ice hockey more even if he couldn't skate. An ice rink opened in his hometown Neuss in 1973. One year later he joined the newly-formed youth team, shortly before his 13th birthday. He became goaltender because he was the worst skater.
Soon joined Düsseldorf and got a moped license at 16 to drive there for a one-hour ride three or four times a week.
In 1983 Düsseldorfer EG recruited national team goalie Erich Weishaupt and De Raaf moved to rival Kölner EC, winning his first championship in the first season there.
After 1988 Olympic Games, he didn't play with national team during one year and a half in order to stay with his 3-month-old son Moritz.
Uncle of Oliver Jonas (German national team) and Isabel Jonas (German womens national team).
Player of the year 1993 and six-time best goaltender in German league (1986, 1987, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994).
Won eleven German league titles: four with Cologne, five with Düsseldorf and two more as Mannheim second and third goalie in the end of his playing career.
Then he became Mannheim junior hockey coach and won ten junior titles with the team.
Inducted into the German Hockey Hall of Fame.

In 1983 Düsseldorfer EG recruited national team goalie Erich Weishaupt and De Raaf moved to rival Kölner EC, winning his first championship in the first season there.
Oncle de Oliver Jonas (équipe d'Allemagne masculine) and Isabel Jonas (équipe d'Allemagne féminine).
Intronisé au Eishockey Hall of Fame allemand.
