Born in Sudbury, ON but grew up in Val Caron, ON. Son of an electrician. Began skating at age three. His parents helped build an outdoor rink in the neighborhood to nurture his talent.
Choppy, high energy skating style. Strong and deceivingly fast shot. Good drive and determination.
In the NHL, he was recognizable for his long curly hair which would blow behind him as he skated without a helmet, making him a fan favorite. Also a popular figure in New York's night life. He was called the “Romeo of the Rink”, “Broadway Joe Namath on Skates” and Mick Jagger on Ice”. Was a lot in the New York gossip columns. Turned up in commercials and on covers of magazines.
Retired in 1992 but made a comeback in 1995, playing sporadically until 1999. He continued making brief appearances as a player in 2002/03 and 2008/09.
Coached the Jacksonville Barracudas for some years in the early 2000s. Worked as an in-studio analyst during MSG Network's coverage of the New York Rangers.

C'était aussi une figure populaire de la vie nocturne de New York. On l'appelait le "Roméo de la patinoire", le "Joe Namath de Broadway sur patins" et le "Mick Jagger sur glace". Il alimentait les potins des journaux de New York, apparaissait dans les publicités et sur les couvertures des magazines.
Retraité en 1992 mais a fait un comeback en 1995, jouant sporadiquement jusqu'en 1999. brèves apparitions comme joueur en 2002/03 et 2008/09.
Entraîneur des Jacksonville Barracudas de 2003 à 2006. Analyste de studio sur MSG Network pour couvrir les rencontres des New York Rangers.
