Older brother of Karol Fonfara. Began playing street hockey on the Dąbrówki street in Katowice together with his brothers Karol and Adolf. They created their own equipment and picked up broken sticks on famous Torkat rink to repair them.
One of the top Polish players of all time. He was very serious about hockey and always very organized and orderly.
He was an excellent skater. Had a low crouch with a wide stance when he skated and had great stick technique.
Played club hockey with Start Katowice at the age of 13. Played with Górnik (GKS) Katowice from 1959. Four times Polish league champion. Polish player of the year in 1965 and 1968. Top scorer in the Polish league 1964/65 (47 goals) and 1967/68 (41 goals). He also played in Jastrzębie.
Scored 54 goals in 102 games for the Polish National team between 1959 and 1969. Officially had 3 assists at 1969 WCB but it should be 4.
Retired as a player in 1976 and then worked some years as a warehouse manager. Returned to hockey in 1986 and coached junior hockey as well as Górnik Katowice.
He was also an excellent tennis player and trained with Polish national team players.
Unfortunately, when he passed away the Polish ice Hockey Association (PZHL) was not there at his funeral, neither was any club representative from his former clubs. It was a shame that he wasn’t recognized more by them. Several players, like Henry Reguła, Sylwester Wilczek and Hubert Sitko wrote letters to the Polish ice Hockey Association for a plea that they would hold a minute of silence for Fonfara during one of the games in order to honor his memory.
In 2018 he was one of the first six GKS Katowice players to be inducted into their Hall of Fame together with Janusz Świerc, Maksymilian Lebek, Henryk Reguła, Sylwester Wilczek and Kazimierz Małysiak.

Frère aîné de Karol Fonfara, autre international polonais avec lequel il a appris le hockey, en compagnie d'Adolf, le troisième de la fratrie. Ils s'exerçaient rue Dąbrówki, dans leur ville natale de Katowice. Ils créaient leur propre équipement et récupéraient les crosses cassées sur la célèbre patinoire Torkat pour les réparer.
Un des meilleurs joueurs polonais de tous les temps. Il était très sérieux à propos du hockey et toujours très organisé et ordonné.
Excellent patineur. Il avait une position basse et large quand il patinait et une excellente technique.
Andrzej débute pour le club le plus pauvre de Katowice, le Start, avant de rejoindre le Górnik (ou GKS) en 1959. Quatre fois champion de Pologne, deux fois élu joueur polonais de l'année (1965 et 1968), deux fois meilleur buteur du championnat polonais (47 buts en 1964-65, 41 en 1967-68). Il a aussi joué à Jastrzębie.
Vite devenu un cadre de l'équipe nationale, pour laquelle il claquera 54 buts en 102 rencontres jouées entre 1959 et 1969. Une erreur de comptage lui attribue trois assistances au lieu de quatre lors du Mondial B 1969.
Arrête de jouer en 1976 et travaille dix ans à la gestion d'un entrepôt de marchandises. Revient au hockey en 1986 pour s'occuper d'équipes de jeunes et de son cher Górnik Katowice.
C'était aussi un excellent joueur de tennis et il s'entraînait avec des joueurs de l'équipe de Pologne.
Malheureusement, la fédération polonaise de hockey sur glace (PZHL) n'était pas présente à son enterrement en 2017, ni le moindre représentant de ses anciens clubs. Il était honteux qu'il n'ait pas reçu cette reconnaissance. Plusieurs joueurs comme Henry Reguła, Sylwester Wilczek et Hubert Sitko ont écrit des lettres à la fédération pour demander une minute de silence durant un match pour honorer la mémoire de Fonfara.
En 2018 il fut l'un des six premiers joueurs du GKS Katowice à être intronisé dans le Hall of Fame du club avec Janusz Świerc, Maksymilian Lebek, Henryk Reguła, Sylwester Wilczek et Kazimierz Małysiak.
