Born in Akron, ON, but grew up in Toronto, ON and Switzerland.
Great bloodline as father Dave played in the NHL, and so did his grandfather Cal, as well as his uncle Paul. Seemed as a sure bet NHL’er given his great size.
Played well as a junior but hit a growth spurt as he arrived in the Ontario Hockey League.
Unfortunately his skating could not catch up to his height and his game began to suffer.
Grew up in Switzerland during the 1980s when his father played there.
During the off seasons the family lived in Toronto. In 1999 he moved back to Switzerland.
Ryan Gardner stayed in Switzerland and eventually gained Swiss citizenship in 2009.
Became player safety officer in the Swiss National League.

Né à Akron dans l'Ontario, il a grandi à Toronto et en Suisse quand son père Dave y jouait (de 1980 à 1988). La famille vivait à Toronto pendant l’intersaison.
Lignée prestigieuse : son père Dave a joué dans la NHL comme son grand-père Cal, ainsi que son oncle Paul.
Considéré comme un futur joueur certain de NHL par son gabarit, il jouait bien en junior mais a fait face à une poussée de croissance quand il est arrivé en OHL. Malheureusement, son patinage n’a pas suivi sa taille (198 cm, 100 kg) et son jeu en a souffert.
En 1999 il retourne en Suisse. Il y reste et obtient la nationalité suisse en 2009.
Devenu responsable de la sécurité des joueurs en National League suisse, il fait partie de la commission qui trie les gestes dangereux et simulations à envoyer au juge unique qui inflige amendes et suspensions.
