Grew up in Minnesota but went back to his birth place Omaha (his father was a junior coach there for two years) to study in the University of Nebraska.
He was drafted in the third round as a two-way center with good hockey sense but didn't impress in the NHL when he was tried in that role. Instead he became an opportunistic goalscoring winger because he fitted perfectly with superstar center Sidney Crosby.
Therefore Guentzel had immediate success in the NHL. He scored two goals in his first game with the Pittsburgh Penguins in November 2016. In June he lifted the 2017 Stanley Cup after scoring 13 playoffs goals (including 5 game-winning-goals, a NHL record for a rookie).
After he declined a six-year extension, he was traded by the Penguins during the last year of his contract (March 2024).

Il a grandi dans le Minnesota mais est retourné dans sa ville natale Omaha (où son père avait été entraîneur pendant deux ans) pour étudier à l'université du Nebraska.
Choisi au troisième tour de draft par les Penguins de Pittsburgh parce qu'il était vu comme un potentiel centre défensif avec un bon sens du hockey, il n'a pas convaincu quand il a été testé dans ce rôle en NHL. En revanche, il s'est révélé l'ailier le plus complémentaire de la superstar Sidney Crosby, devenant un buteur opportuniste hors pair.
Son arrivée dans la ligue a ainsi été tonitruante, avec deux buts à son premier match en novembre 2016, puis 13 buts dans les playoffs (dont 5 buts gagnants, record pour un rookie) qui le voient soulever la Coupe Stanley 2017.
Après avoir décliné une prolongation de six ans, il a été échangé par les Penguins pendant sa dernière année de contrat, en mars 2024.
