Workmanlike player and not flashy. Always put the team ahead of himself.
First started playing ice hockey in 1946 where he joined the Southern Suburbs team playing out of St Kilda's St Moritz (Melbourne).
The following year the Southern Suburbs where renamed Monarchs and as well as playing out of St Moritz the team also begun playing at the Glaciarium.
Played on the 1960 Australian Olympic team and was active on many other National and Interstate teams.
Retired in 1963 and then coached the Monarchs a few years.
Played in the very first IHV Oldtimers game in 1974 for Melbourne Nite Owls.
Long time organizer of Oldtimers league in Melbourne and continued to play in them for years.
Played in Pacemakers 45 team in 2008 in his early-80s.
The Hansen Cup is awarded to the Winning Team 35+ Group I in the Oldtimers league.
The Basil Hansen Championship Trophy is awarded to the IHV Premier Reserve League Champions.

Joueur travailleur et pas spectaculaire. Il plaçait toujours l'équipe au-dessus de son cas personnel.
Il a commencé par jouer en 1946 pour les Southern Suburbs qui évoluaient au St Kilda's St Moritz (Melbourne).
L'année suivante les Southern Suburbs ont été rebaptisés Monarchs et, outre St Moritz, ils ont aussi joué au Glaciarium.
Il a joué pour l'équipe olympique d'Australie en 1960 et a été actif au sein d'autres sélections d"échelle nationale.
Il a pris sa retraite en 1963 et a ensuite entraîné les Monarchs pendant quelques années.
Il a participé au tout premier match de vétérans de l'État du Victoria en 1974 pour les Melbourne Nite Owls.
Il a longtemps organisé le championnat de vétérans à Melbourne tout en continuant à y jouer.
Il a joué pour les Pacemakers en 2008 alors qu'il avait 81 ans.
La Hansen Cup est attribuée au champion du groupe I des plus de 35 ans dans le championnat vétérans.
Le Basil Hansen Championship Trophy est attribué au champion de la Premier Reserve League de l'État du Victoria.
