Born and raised in Prague. Got his first skates at the age of six.
In the summers he played football for SK Smichov with his two year older brother Jan. He later changed to SK Podoli Praha.
In 1949 he moved to Sparta CKD Sokolovo Praha. There he won two ice hockey championships with his brother 1953 and 1954.
Very stylish goaltender with great reflexes.
Never hid the fact that he didn’t like the regime, which hurt his playing career on the national team. Represented Czechoslovakia 15 times.
His political views against communism ment that he only appeared in one World Championship.
Was nominated in 1956 but got injured. Instead he released a book in 1956 about his playing career.
In 1960 he was accused of being involved in a betting scandal and was sentenced to three years in prison, spending two and a half years of hard labour.
In 1968 he fled to West Germany with his wife through Yugoslavia. Went on to have a successful coaching career in hockey.
Lived in Germany for many years. Passed away in late October 2011.

Né et élevé à Prague. Il a eu ses premiers patins à six ans.
L'été il jouait au football pour le SK Smichov avec son frère aîné de deux ans Jan. Il est ensuite allé au SK Podoli Prague.
En 1949 il est passé au Sparta, et il y a remporté deux titres de champion de Tchécoslovaquie en hockey avec son frère en 1953 et 1954.
Gardien très stylé avec d'excellents réflexes.
Il n'a jamais caché qu'il n'aimait pas le régime, ce qui a nui à sa carrière de joueur en équipe nationale (15 sélections).
Ses opinions politiques sur le communisme ont fait qu'il n'est apparu qu'à un championnat du monde.
Il a été nommé pour les Jeux olympiques 1956 mais s'est blessé. Il a alors publié un livre sur sa carrière de joueur en cette même année 1956.
En 1960 il a été accusé d'être impliqué dans un scandale de paris et a été condamné à trois ans de prison, passant deux ans et demi aux travaux forcés.
En 1968 il a fui en Allemagne de l'ouest avec son épouse en passant par la Yougoslavie. Il y a eu une belle carrière d'entraîneur.
Il a longtemps vécu en Allemagne et y est décédé fin octobre 2011.
