Born in the USA from Canadian parents who were both born in Edmonton but settled and worked in Syracuse.
His mother Stephanie is a pharmacist. His father Gary is an orthopaedic surgeon specialized in hands, wrists and elbows. But he was also an ice hockey goalie who won Canadian university championship with the Alberta Golden Bears in 1992. After his workdays in the hospital, Gary coached his children's ice hockey teams in the evenings. Thomas learnt ice hockey with him from 6 to 14 before going to Ontario and was converted from a forward to a defenceman by his dad. He also played soccer and lacrosse.
Despite his size (191 cm, 88 kg) he is not overly aggressive. His main assets are his smooth skating and his hockey sense. He has great position control in the defensive zone and moves the puck well in transition play.
Thomas holds both Canadian and American citizenship but declined US National Team Development Program and chose to play for Team Canada.
He got only a silver medal with Canadian junior team but was an emergency replacement during 2024 4 nations faceoff and won the tournament.

Né aux États-Unis de parents canadiens, nés à Edmonton, qui se sont installés à Syracuse pour le travail.
Sa mère Stephanie est pharmacienne. Son père Gary est un chirurgien orthopédique spécialisé en mains, poignets et coudes. Mais c'était aussi un gardien de hockey qui a été champion universitaire du Canada en 1992 avec les Golden Bears de l'Alberta. Après sa journée de travail à l'hôpital, Gary entrainait les équipes de ses enfants le soir. Thomas a donc appris le hockey sur glace avec lui de 6 à 14 ans avant de parti dans l'Ontario, et c'est donc son père qui l'a reconverti d'attaquant en défenseur un jour où il lui manquait un arrière. Il a aussi joué au football (soccer) et à la crosse.
Malgré sa grande taille (191 cm, 88 kg) il n'a pas un jeu agressif. Ses atouts majeurs sont un patinage fluide et une belle vision du jeu. Son positionnement est très contrôlé en zone défensive, et il remonte vite le palet en jeu de transition.
Thomas a la double nationalité mais a décliné l'invitation du programme national de développement américain et a choisi de représenter le Canada.
Il n'a obtenu qu'une médaille d'argent pour le Canada en juniors mais a remplacé un blessé (Shea Theodore) à la Confrontation des 4 nations où il a remporté son premier tournoi international.
