Legendary Finnish player who began playing ice hockey at the age of 12.
He should have debuted at 18 in Finnish hockey league but broke his leg playing football in Summer 1942.
So he debuted only in 1943/44 at 19. He was the best scorer in his team in his first season.
Finland’s best player in the mid 1940s and early 1950s. Played on the ”H-ketjun” (H-Line) together with Yrjö Hakala and Kalle Havulinna.
Played his entire career for Ilves with the exception of a short visit to Canada where he appeared in two exhibition games for Sarnia Sailors.
His playing career ended in 1953 when he broke his shin after a Polish player fell on to it during a game between Finland and Poland.
He made two brief comebacks in 1956/57 and 1957/58.
Represented Finland 47 times (46+12). Went on to coach in ice hockey.
The Aarne Honkavaara Trophy is given to the player who scores the most goals during regular season play in the Finnish SM-Liiga.
Inducted into the IIHF and Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame.

Il aurait pu débuter en championnat à 18 ans mais il s'est cassé la jambe en jouant au football à l'été 1942.
Il a donc débuté en 1943/44 à 19 ans, devenant tout de suite le meilleur marqueur de son équipe.
Meilleur joueur finlandais des années d'après-guerre. Membre de la "H-ketjun" (ligne H) avec Yrjö Hakala et Kalle Havulinna.
Il a joué toute sa carrière pour Ilves avec pour seule exception une visite au Canada pour deux matchs d’exhibition avec les Sailors de Sarnia.
Sa carrière prend fin en 1953 quand il se casse le tibia pendant un match Finlande-Pologne où un joueur polonais tombe sur lui.
Deux brefs retours en 1956/57 et en 1957/58. 47 sélections en équipe de Finlande (46 buts et 12 assists).
Devenu entraîneur. Le trophée Aarne Honkavaara est donné au meilleur marqueur de la SM-liiga.
Introduit au Temple de la renommée du hockey de l’IIHF. Intronisé parmi les Lions du hockey finlandais (Jääkiekkoleijona, numéro 10).
