Jarkko, Martti "Mara"
Position : C
26-11-1953 Tampere, FIN
Youth team / club formateur : Tappara Tampere
One of the most talented Finnish players ever. Highly skilled center with superior stickhandling skills and overall ability to dazzle the crowd with nifty moves. Not a very good skater and pretty much a one dimensional player with no desire to backcheck. Frequently clashed with his coaches, this combined with his laziness hurt him on the national team. He and other Tappara players boycotted the 1976 World Championships because of differences with coach Seppo Liitsola.
He was drafted in the NHL by New York Islanders in 1974. Represented Finland 63 times (15+21). Scored 575 (274+301) league points in 382 games. Retired in 1987.
Inducted into the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame.
PH
