Position : LW
13-02-1953 Ukhta, URS (RUS)
04-06-1995 Moskva, RUS
Youth team / club formateur : Neftyanik Ukhta
Powerful skater who was hard to stop once he got going towards the net. Quickly became a crowd favorite with Moscow fans who loved his flair and skills. Technically a world class player. Legendary coach Boris Kulagin called him "the greatest talent of Soviet ice hockey for the past 25 years" in 1971. Chosen as the best 13-year old in the country in 1966. Already played for the Krylia Sovietov senior team as a 15-year old.
World Championship tournament All-Star in 1978 and 1981. Often formed a line with Helmut Balderis and Victor Zhluktov. Also played on a line with Viktor Shalimov and Sergei Shepelev.
NHL showed an interest in him but the political climate back then didn’t allow him to test his luck in North America, even though he was drafted by NY Rangers in 1982. Played 517 league games, scoring 448 points (277+171). Represented Soviet Union 208 times (120 goals). Retired in 1988.
In 1980 his first son, Sergei Jr., who was four years old, died from transient pneumonia. It took forever for the ambulance to show up. Doctors later said: "Why didn’t you just say on the phone that this is the son of the famous hockey player Kapustin?".
He took the death of his son hard. After his playing career he started to drink. In the summer of 1995 he was at the local pond, injuring his hand but did not pay any attention to his wounds. The wound got infected and he needed urgent hospitalization. He received the best treatment, including getting a blood transfusion, but his life could not be saved. Kapustin was buried at Vostryakovskoe Cemetery, next to his son.
Inducted into the Russian Hall of Fame.
