He was born and grew up in Moscow. He was too young to enlist in the army for World War II. Instead he worked at a plant that made weapons and other military material. The poverty forced him to steal food and he almost got imprisoned.
Began playing for CDSA Moscow, but soon had an argument with Anatoli Tarasov and was sent to Leningrad. Outspoken player who had his differences with the coaches, thus never given the chance to play much on the National Team. Paired briefly with Soviet great Nikolai Sologubov and later with a certain Viktor Tikhonov, future coach of the Soviet national team.
Played 340 league games, scoring 43 goals. Represented Soviet Union 15 times (3 goals). Retired in 1965. Went into coaching after his playing career where he was active until the 1980s. His son Sergei was also a good player and won the 1979 World Junior Championships.
Inducted into the Russian Hockey Hall of Fame.

Cet enfant de Moscou et de la Seconde guerre mondiale était un peu jeune pour aller sur le front. À la place, une usine d'armement se fit un plaisir de l'embaucher mais pas de l'alimenter suffisamment, apparemment. Encore adolescent, il faillit être emprisonné pour avoir volé de la nourriture.
Le conflit terminé, il débute en tant que hockeyeur au CDSA Moscou, le nom de l'époque du club de l'armée où sévissait déjà Anatoli Tarasov. Karpov n'eut pas l'heur de plaire au grand manitou avec qui il se disputa, ce qui lui valut un envoi manu militari à Leningrad. Aucun doute quant au fait que son caractère affirmé lui coûta une belle carrière en équipe d'URSS puisqu'en club, il fit la paire défensive avec des illustres comme Nikolai Sologubov ou un certain Viktor Tikhonov, le futur sélectionneur national. Son compteur de sélections internationales est donc resté bloqué à 15 matches pour 3 buts.
Il accumulera en revanche 340 matches de championnat (43 buts) jusqu'à son retrait des glaces en 1965. Entraînera jusqu'au milieu des années 1980. Son fils Sergei fut également un joueur de haut niveau, champion du monde junior en 1979.
Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey russe.
