Born in Černošice about 18 km (11 miles) from Prague. Very fast and technically skilled player. He was discovered by former national team player Jiří Tožička when he played for HC Černošice. Played for ČLTK Praha (1945-49), ATK Praha (1949-50) and Dynamo (Tesla) Pardubice (1956-64). Scored a total of 94 goals in 177 league games. Represented Czechoslovakia 29 times (18 goals).
He was arrested in 1950 as a political prisoner for being "anti-communistic". After seven months of interrogations he was finally sentenced to 10 years of hard labour.
He went on to coach after his playing career. He left for Switzerland in 1969. Also nicknamed "Kobra".
Inducted into the Czech Hockey Hall of Fame.

Né à Černošice, à une vingtaine de kilomètres de Prague, il débuta dans le club local et détonna tellement par sa vitesse et ses dons techniques qu'il tapa dans l'oeil de l'international d'alors Jiří Tožička. Âgé de 18 ans, Kobranov rejoignit le ČLTK (devenu ATK) Prague où il resta jusqu'en 1950 avant d'être arrêté pour son comportement "anti-communiste". La paranoïa de la dictature lui valut sept mois d'interrogatoire et une condamnation à dix ans de travaux forcés, qui seront commués en six.
Sorti de cette épreuve en 1956, il reprit du service à Pardubice, où il restera jusqu'à 37 ans. En tout, il aura disputé 177 matches de championnat tchécoslovaque (94 buts) et honoré 29 sélections internationales (18 buts).
Celui que l'on surnommait aussi "Kobra" deviendra entraîneur juste après sa carrière, une reconversion déjà entamée quand il jouait, puis fera défection en 1969 vers la Suisse, pays où il finira ses jours.
Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey tchèque.
