His father Milan and mother Anika emigrated in 1994 from Spišská Nová Ves in Slovakia. They wanted their children to have a better future, and decided to leave to Brooklyn, New York. Shortly after the move, Kevins older sister Diane was born and a year later Kevin was born. By that time, the Labanc family had moved to Staten Island.
The elder Labanc got his son to love hockey as much as he did. The family used to go and watch the New York Rangers play, and they of course became the favourite team of Kevin Labanc. His favourite players growing up included, Jaromír Jágr, Marián Gáborík and Petr Průcha.
Labanc developed into a smart playmaking winger, and a proven point producer, as well as an offensive catalyst in the NHL. Very good hockey sense, especially in the offensive zone. Seen as a natural playmaker. A bit undersized for the NHL and battled some inconsistency during his playing career.
Didn't get a new contract after a declining eighth year in San José and got a tryout with New Jersey. Despite he was NHL preseason top goalscorer (6 goals) the Devils didn't offer him a contract and signed with Columbus instead. He scored only 2 goals in 34 games before getting a shoulder injury. The next year he went to the KHL after an unsuccessful tryout with Carolina.

Leur fille Diane est née juste après leur emménagement et leur fils Kevin est né un an plus tard. À cette époque, la famille Labanc avait quitté le quartier de Brooklyn pour Staten Island.
Le père Labanc a transmis son amour du hockey à son fils. La famille assistait aux matches des Rangers de New York, qui sont bien sûr devenus l'équipe favorite de Kevin Labanc. Ses joueurs favoris incluaient Jaromír Jágr, Marián Gáborík et Petr Průcha.
Labanc est devenu un ailier intelligent et créatif, à la production de points éprouvée, et un catalyseur offensif en NHL. Très bon sens du hockey, surtout en zone offensive. Meneur de jeu naturel. Un peu petit par la NHL (180 cm, 84 kg), il a dû faire face à des problèmes de régularité durant sa carrière de joueur.
Non conservé par les Sharks après une huitième saison déclinante à San José, il signe un essai pour New Jersey et est le meilleur buteur de la présaison NHL 2024/25 (6 buts). Pourtant, les ambitieux Devills ne lui proposent pas de contrat et il signe alors pour une équipe de bas de tableau, Columbus. Il ne marque que 2 buts en 34 parties et se blesse à l'épaule en février. La saison suivante, après un essai infructueux au camp de Carolina, il signe en KHL.
237 points (84+153) en 512 parties de saison régulière en NHL.
