Lindström grew up only 50 metres from the local hockey rink. There he and his brother Evert played hockey whenever they could. Both brothers made it to the Swedish elite league.
Fondly dubbed "Willy the Wisp" by his teammates for his stickhandling and speed. Skated with his legs far apart giving him good balance. Good shot with a quick release. Always kept himself in good shape. Fairly aggressive style of play, well suited for North American hockey.
In Frölunda he played on a line with Mats Lindh and Jörgen Pettersson.
Did his military service as a truck driver in the Army before heading over to North America.
Spent 12 years there, 4 in the WHA and 8 in the NHL. Won three AVCO Cups (WHA) and two Stanley Cups.
One of the highlights of his career was to play on the same team as his boyhood idol Bobby Hull.
Returned back to Sweden in 1987 and eventually retired in 1990.
Lindström was a very good friend of Wayne Gretzky, who is the godfather of Willy’s son Liam (drafted in the NHL 2003 by Phoenix Coyotes).

Lindström a grandi à 50 mètres de la patinoire locale. Son frère Evert et lui pouvaient jouer au hockey quand ils le voulaient. Ils ont connu l'Elitserien suédoise.
Surnommé “Willy the Wisp” ("Willy le feu follet") par ses coéquipiers du fait de son habileté crosse en main et sa vitesse. Il patinait avec ses jambes écartées ce qui lui donnait un bon équilibre. Bon lancer exécuté rapidement. Toujours en bonne condition physique. Son style de jeu était hargneux mais correct, parfaitement adapté au hockey nord-américain.
À Frölunda il jouait sur une ligne avec Mats Lindh et Jörgen Pettersson.
Il fit son service militaire comme conducteur de camions dans l'armée avant de partir en Amérique du Nord.
Il y joua 12 saisons, 4 en WHA et 8 en NHL. Il remporta trois fois la coupe AVCO (WHA) et deux coupes Stanley.
Un des grands moments de sa carrière fut de jouer dans l'équipe de son idole de jeunesse Bobby Hull.
Il fit son retour en Suède en 1987 et prit sa retraite en 1990.
Lindström était très ami avec Wayne Gretzky, devenu le parrain de son fils Liam qui fut drafté en NHL en 2003 par les Coyotes de Phoenix.
323 points (161+162) en 582 parties de saison régulière de NHL.
