Mahovlich, Peter Joseph ("Little M")

Son of Croatian immigrants. Younger brother of the more famous Frank "The Big M" Mahovlich who was a big influence.
Had awesome size but was a pretty good skater, although not speedy or particularly agile.
He excelled as a stickhandler, playmaker and penalty killer.
The knock on him was that he wasn’t as physical as many wanted him to be.
Had a crafty and industrious approach to the game and was characterized as an easy going, and joyful person.
Said that Bernie Parent and Terry Sawchuk were the best goalies that he ever faced.
Retired in August 1982. Made a short comeback in 1985/86, but had to retire due to a knee injury.
Went on to coach in the minor leagues and worked as an NHL-scout. He also worked as a TV color commentator for a while.
Mahovlich was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1997 and underwent surgery, but cancer returned in 2000 and later went into remission again.

Enfant d'immigrants croates. Frère cadet du célèbre Frank "The Big M" Mahovlich, qui avait une grosse influence sur lui.
Il combinait une superbe taille avec un patinage plutôt bon, bien qu'il ne fut pas particulièrement rapide et agile.
Excellent manieur de crosse, créateur de jeu et joueur d'infériorité numérique.
Son défaut était de ne pas être aussi physique que ses entraîneurs le souhaitaient.
Approche très méthodique du jeu. Réputé facile à vivre et enjoué.
Il disait que Bernie Parent et Terry Sawchuk étaient les meilleurs gardiens qu'il ait eu à affronter.
Retraité en août 1982. Il fit un bref retour en 1985/86, mais une blessure au genou l'empêcha de poursuivre.
Il devint entraîneur en ligues mineures et dépisteur pour la NHL. Il fut aussi consultant pour la télévision.
Mahovlich contracta un cancer de la prostate en 1997 et subit une intervention chirurgicale ; le cancer revint en 2000 avant une nouvelle rémission.
773 points (288+485) en 884 parties de saison régulière dans la NHL.
