Born in Leipzig but moved to Frankfurt at 1 and to Bad Nauheim at 11. There his father was a high school principal.
Known as the "Man with the Black Mask". Catched with his right glove.
He began his playing career in Bad Nauheim 1957 and played there until 1970.
In Bad Nauheim he was mentored by Larry Palmer, the Olympic gold medalist from 1960.
Betweeen 1970 and 1977 he played for Düsseldorfer EG. He graduated as a jurist in the meantime.
After that he played for EC Deilinghofen, Kölner EC and SB Rosenheim, retiring in 1981.
He represented West Germany a total of 53 times.
His daughter is Heike Makatsch (b.1971), actress who have appeared in several Hollywood movies like Love Actually, Resident Evil and The Book Thief.

Né à Leipzig, il a grandi à Francfort à l'âge de 1 an avant de partir à 11 ans à Bad Nauheim, où son père était proviseur dans un lycée.
Connu comme "L'homme au masque noir", il portait la mitaine à la main droite.
Il commença sa carrière à Bad Nauheim de 1957 à 1970 et y eut comme tuteur Larry Palmer, médaille d'or olympique en <>1960.
Entre 1970 et 1977 il joua à Düsseldorf, tout en obtenant son diplôme de juriste, puis porta les couleurs de Deilinghofen, Cologne et Rosenheim, jusqu'à sa retraite en 1981.
Il n'avait pas son pareil pour rire des provocations des supporters adverses et pour modérer les excès de ses propres supporters.
53 sélections avec l'Allemagne de l'Ouest.
Sa fille Heike Makatsch (née en 1971) est actrice et a joué dans plusieurs films hollywoodiens dont Love Actually, Resident Evil ou The Book Thief.
