Martin, Richard Lionel "Rico"

Position : LW

26-07-1951 Verdun, QC, CAN
13-03-2011 Clarence, NY, USA

Youth team / club formateur : Thetford Mines Canadiens

His grandparents were Swiss-French and Swiss-German. His mother was French, but his father was born in Scotland and was a proud Scotsman.
Rick Martin was always proud of his half-French heritage. He went to French speaking schools and spoke French and English equally well.
He started playing hockey at the age of eight.
In the NHL (Buffalo Sabres) he was part of one of the most famous lines in hockey history: "The French Connection" with fellow Québecers, Gilbert Perreault and René Robert.
Some called him the greatest natural goal scorer to play in the NHL. His slapshot struck fear in goalies everywhere.
Bobby Hull might have had a harder shot but Martin had a quicker release and on target, which made him so effective.
His playing career basically ended on November 8, 1980 in a game against the Washington Capitals. He was racing in on a breakaway, was tripped and then kicked in the knee by goalie Mike Palmateer, causing severe cartilage damage.
Rick Martin tried to play but had to retire at the start of the 1981/82 season.
In June 1982, he sued the Buffalo Sabres, contending that he received improper medical treatment for an injured knee that forced him to an early retirement. There were seven separate suits, including one against coach Scotty Bowman.
Owned Globalquest Solutions and Globalquest Staffing Solutions in Williamsville, New York.
He also owned a bar/restaurant called Slapshot on Niagara Falls Boulevard in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
Passed away after suffering a heart attack while driving his car. It was a result of a complication of hypertensive arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
Later analysis revealed that Martin had stage 2 chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a disease normally associated with enforcers; the damage was believed to stem from a severe concussion Martin sustained in 1977, and it had no effect on his cognitive abilities.
Martin was the first non-enforcer to have been diagnosed with the disease, which can only be diagnosed posthumously.
NHL totals: 685-384-317-701
