Split time between defence and attack in his youth. Powerplay quaterback for Dinamo Riga until 1991.
Reads the game well. Good at picking the pucks sent in his own zone to launch quick counter-attacks.
Reliable defenceman who made few mistakes and could keep the puck. Good backwards skating.
He was quite slow in the end but played in the national team until he was 39.
Represented Latvia 117 times, scoring 48 (13 + 35).
Maticins returned back to Latvia in 2004 and eventually retired in 2006 at 43.
Coached the Latvian U-20 team between 2007/08 and 2009/10. Then he had to work as a floorball coach before becoming an assistant coach in Russia, Ukraine and China.

Jusqu'en 1991 au Dinamo Riga, il alternait entre l'attaque et la défense, participant au jeu offensif en avantage numérique.
Bonne lecture de jeu. Fiable, commettant peu d'erreurs. Bonne conservation du palet. Bon patinage arrière.
Belle capacité à récupérer les palets envoyés en fond de zone pour lancer de bonnes contre-attaques.
Lent en fin de carrière, mais c'est parce qu'il a joué en équipe nationale jusqu'à 39 ans.
117 sélections en équipe de Lettonie, 48 points (13 + 35).
Rentré en Lettonie en 2004 après deux ans en Finlande et dix en Suède, Maticins a pris sa retraite en 2006 à 43 ans.
En tant que sélectionneur, il a fait monter les moins de 20 ans lettons dans l'élite mondiale en 2007/08 et les a maintenus en 2008/09 avant une descente en 2009/10.
Compte tenu du faible nombre de postes d'entraîneurs en Lettonie, il a alors entraîné l'équipe de floorball de Ķekava avant de trouver un poste d'assistant-coach des juniors dans sa ville natale Cherepovets, où il avait gardé des conections. Il a ainsi pu faire une carrière d'entraîneur-adjoint pendant huit ans dans le hockey sur glace en Russie, Ukraine et en Chine.
