Talented goaltender who had a very promising playing career ahead of him as a junior player.
Fairly aggressive goaltender who liked to come out and challenge the shooters.
Finnish rookie of the year in 1974/75.
Served as a backup at the 1976 World Championships and was the youngest Finnish player.
Drafted both in the WHA and NHL in 1977.
In 1980 he was in goal when Wayne Gretzky scored his first NHL hat trick. Four years later Mattsson put an end to Gretzky s NHL-record 51 game scoring streak.
Mattsson was the third goaltender at the 1986 World Championships. Retired in 1987.
He went on to serve as a full-time chairman of the board of the family-owned Insta Group Oy.
Inducted into the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame.

Drafté aussi bien par la WHA que par la NHL en 1977.
En 1980 il était dans la cage quand Wayne Gretzky a inscrit son premier hat-trick en NHL. Quatre ans plus tard, c'est lui qui a mis fin à la série record NHL de 51 matchs consécutifs à au moins un but pour Gretzky.
Retraité en 1987. Devenu président du conseil d'administration de la société familiale Insta Group Oy.
Intronisé parmi les Lions du hockey finlandais (Jääkiekkoleijona, numéro 111).
4,11 buts par match encaissés et 86,8 % d'arrêts en 92 parties de saison régulière de NHL.
