As a youth hockey player growing up in St. Paul in the 1940s, he rotated in at goaltender just like the rest of his teammates.
Competitive goaltender who always played hard until the end, no matter what the score was.
Known for his fast glove hand. Had good size and stood up and cut down the angles well.
By many considered the best US player at the 1960 Winter Olympics. Rightfully chosen as the best goalie of the tournament.
Also a great baseball player who was an All-American third baseman.
Was an interim coach briefly in the WHA. Retired in 1975 and went on to work as an NHL scout.
Inducted into the US and IIHF Hockey Hall of Fame.

Il a brièvement coaché par interim en WHA. À sa retraite en 1975, il est devenu recruteur pour la NHL.
Intronisé au temple de la renommée du hockey américain et de l'IIHF.
3,17 buts encaissés par match et 88,6 % d'arrêts en 42 parties dans la NHL.
