Bernd Haake, who owned Bielefeld skate shop since the construction of the ice rink and founded SV Brackwede youth hockey, discovered 16-year-old Karsten there and made him come to Iserlohn where he coached the junior team.
Solid-sized blueliner Mende worked his way up from the lower German leagues with Iserlohn before joining a top team, Cologne. He won the German league title in 1995.
73 points (20+53) in 269 German elite league games. 19 games with German national team, 7 points (1+6).
Retired in 2000 and became Iserlohn sports manager. He hired Haake as assistant-coach there.
Mende was voted as the DEL manager of the year in 2015.
On December 27, 2018 he had a heart attack. He recovered from it but couldn't go back to his work.

L'entraîneur diplômé Bernd Haake, propriétaire de la boutique (prêt de patins et vente d'autres articles) depuis la création de la patinoire de Bielefeld, le découvre à 16 ans dans la section de jeunes du SV Brackwede - qu'il a fondée - et le fait venir à Iserlohn où il encadre les juniors.
Défenseur au gabarit solide (188 cm, 92 kg), Karsten Mende a construit son parcours depuis Iserlohn en troisième puis deuxième division avant de rejoindre un de meilleurs clubs du pays, Cologne, avec qui il devint champion d'Allemagne en 1995.
73 points (20+53) en 269 matches d'élite allemande. 19 sélections en équipe d'Allemagne, 7 points (1+6).
Il prend sa retraite en 2000 un an après son retour à Iserlohn, club dont il devient directeur sportif.
Pour boucler la boucle, il y engage Haake comme entraîneur-adjoint de 2006 à 2012.
Élu manager de l'année en DEL en 2015, Mende Il fait une crise cardiaque le 27 décembre 2018. Il en réchappe mais arrête son activité.
