He was born in Ballenstedt, a town in the Harz district, in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt.
Scored 69 (39+30) points in 97 East German league games.
Began playing as a senior in 1971 for SC Dynamo Berlin and won seven league titles.
Represented East Germany 193 times. Inducted into the German Hockey Hall of Fame.
Retired as a player in 1983 but kept his skates on and became an international referee.
At the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, Müller officiated six games as the main referee.
Went on to work for the German Ice Hockey Federation, as the referee in chief.
He also was a full-time instructor and deputy referee chairman, leading their trainee program, junior education, as well as organizes courses for the DEB (Deutsche Eishockey Bund).
He was also responsible for the legal area and regulatory issues and their interpretation.

Retraité en tant que joueur en 1983 mais il a gardé ses patins pour devenir arbitre international.
Lors des Jeux olympiques 1998 à Nagano au Japon, Müller a officié durant six matchs comme arbitre principal.
Il a travaillé au sein de la fédération allemande de hockey (Deutsche Eishockey Bund, DEB) comme responsable des arbitres.
Il fut également instructeur à plein temps, conduisant les programmes d'entraînement, la formation des jeunes arbitres et des cours pour la DEB.
Il était également responsable juridique, en charge de l'interprétation des règlements.
