Champion of Eastprussia in 1941 and 1942.
His mentor was another Rastenburg player, namely Herbert Schibukat.
Niess captained Bad Nauheim for several seasons. Worked as a construction engineer.
In 1954 he was hired by Düsseldorf and helped them to get promoted into elite league until his retirement in 1959.
He was inducted into the German Hockey Hall of Fame.

En 1954 il a été engagé par la Düsseldorfer EG et l'a aidée à monter dans l'élite et à s'y établir jusqu'à sa retraite en 1959.
Intronisé au Hall of Fame du hockey allemand.
