Emerged as a sensation at the age of 12, playing Division 3 hockey with Ockelbo. Helped them gain promotion and played in Division 2 as a 13-year old. In Ockelbo he played together with his older brother Rolf.
He was tutored in Mora by his defensive partner, the great Lill-Strimma Svedberg.
Voted as the best Swedish junior in 1967/68 and as the best player in 1975.
When he came to Brynäs he formed a defensive tandem with Lars Bylund. He won five league titles, helping Brynäs to establish a dynasty in the 1970s.
Coaches liked Östlings reliability. He wasn’t flashy or spectacular in any way, but had a good understanding of the game, was positionally sound and followed the game plan.
National team debut on December 2, 1970 against Czechoslovakia (3-4), being -2 in the game.
Represented Sweden a total of 163 times. Retired in 1984.

Les entraîneurs appréciaient la fiabilité d'Östling. Il n’était pas tape-à-l’œil ou spectaculaire, mais il avait une bonne compréhension du jeu, un bon positionnement et suivait le plan de match.
Débuts en sélection le 2 décembre 1970 contre la Tchécoslovaquie (3-4), avec un ratio de -2 sur ce match.
Totalise 163 sélections. Retraité en 1984.
