Twin brother of Taro Nihei. Born to a Japanese father and Finnish mother. They owned a sushi restaurant in Stockholm and Jiro helped in the kitchen, including during his hockey career. He grew up in Solna, near Stockholm.
Voted as the best goaltender at the 1997 World Championship Pool C tournament.
He never played an official minute in the Swedish elite league, but he did enter the ice to replace Thomas Östlund during a penalty shootout on February 5, 2002. He stopped all shots and won the game for Djurgårdens IF. This attracted attention to him and soon a journalist found out he had been the fourth player outside European Union on the game sheet during four previous games (only 3 such players were allowed). Djurgården was deducted 10 points, the harshest penalty in Swedish history, but the punishment was eventually converted into a fine because it was a unintended mistake (Nihei was only in the bench). Nihei himself had thought he would be considered Swedish, but his unlimited transfer card was invalid because he had played three seasons in Japan.
Hockey coach Thomas Storm was the person who had the greatest impact on him.
He played the majority of his career in Swedish lower divisions, but also played eight seasons in Japan.
Retired in 2007 after five more years in Japan. Became a personal trainer. One year after his hockey retirement, he got a license in a Stockholm shooting club and became a very good shooter. In 2017 he took Gold in the Manual division at the Nordic Rifle Championship. In 2019, he took gold in the Manual Open division at the 2019 IPSC Rifle World Shoot.

Frère jumeau de Taro Nihei. Né d'un père japonais et d'une mère finlandaise. Le couple tenait un restaurant de sushi dans la capitale suédoise et leur fils Jiro aidait en cuisine, y compris pendant sa carrière de hockeyeur. Il a grandi à Solna.
Meilleur gardien du Mondial C 1997.
Il n'a officiellement jamais joué une minute en Elitserien suédoise, mais il est bien entré sur la glace pour remplacer Thomas Östlund durant une séance de tirs au but le 5 février 2002. Il a arrêté tous les pénaltys et remporté le match pour le Djurgårdens IF. Cela a attiré l'attention sur lui et un journaliste s'est alors rendu compte qu'il avait été le quatrième joueur hors Union Européenne inscrit sur la feuille de match lors de quatre rencontres précédentes (alors que seuls trois hockeyeurs hors UE étaient autorisés). Djurgården se vit menacé de perdre 10 points, la plus forte pénalité de l'histoire suédoise, mais la sanction fut convertie en amende en appel parce que c'était une erreur de bonne fois (Nihei n'était que sur le banc). Nihei lui-même pensait être considéré suédois, mais sa licence illimitée n'était plus valide parce qu'il avait joué trois saisons au Japon entre-temps.
L'entraîneur de hockey Thomas Storm est la personne qui a eu le plus grand impact sur lui.
Il a pris sa retraite en 2007 après cinq années supplémentaires au Japon. Devenu entraîneur personnel. Un an après après avoir raccroché les patins, il a pris une licence dans un club de tir pratique de Stockholm et est devenu un très bon tireur. En 2017 il a remporté le championnat nordique de tir dynamique à la carabine manuelle, et en 2019, il est devenu champion du monde de la catégorie.
