Balderis-Sildedzis, Helmūts Guntarovich ("Electric Train")
Position : RW
31-07-1952 Riga, URS (LAT)
Youth team / club formateur : RVR
Regarded as one of the fastest skaters of his generation.
An absolute electrifying and irrational skater who could do everything at the highest speed.
His superb skating enabled him to become the oldest NHL player ever drafted in 1989 at the age of 36 years and 11 months. Not as strong defensively and wasn’t much for physical play either. On his club team he had the individualistic freedom to be creative, but on the national team the coaches required him to backcheck more, use his teammates and put aside his individual play.
Played 462 league games, scoring 580 points (333+247). Additionally he scored almost 100 goals in Division 2 and Division 3.
He also scored 238 points (117+121) in 60 Latvian league games.
Represented Soviet Union 147 times (74 goals) and Latvia 2 times (2 goals).
Often formed a line with Sergei Kapustin and Viktor Zhluktov. Retired in 1996.
Was the general manager of the Latvian national team. Inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame.
He founded a youth hockey club bearing his name, BHS for Baldera Hokeja skolas (Balderis Hockey School).
PH
