His father, who played American football at pro level, was his hockey coach. His mother was a Broadway actress.
Young Matty also learnt to sing and to play the piano, the saxophone and the clarinet.
He wanted to become a dermatologist after his player career and studied medicine at the University of Michigan.
Very mature at a young age. Already scored 9 points in 10 games when he debuted in the NHL with Seattle in spring 2022. Calder trophy winner as the NHL's best rookie 2022/23.
Most comfortable as a center, but not a stranger to play on the wings if needed.
A very good and shifty skater with a good first step, acceleration and top-end speed. Able to beat defenders off the rush. Always in motion. Strong lower body and excellent balance.
Outstanding playmaker with the ability to control the puck. Good at creating space for his teammates. More of a passer than shooter. Accurate shot and quick release when using it. High-end hockey IQ. Transitions the puck from defense to offense extremely well. Solid two-way player and creative in all three zones. Scouts compared his style of play to Patrice Bergeron.

Numéro 2 de la draft NHL 2021 sans être le plus technique ni le plus rapide, car il a une palette subtile de qualités. Après avoir marqué 9 points en 10 parties à ses débuts NHL avec Seattle en fin de saison 2021/22, il a obtenu le trophée Calder de meilleur rookie en 2022/23.
Plus confortable au centre, il ne sent pas étranger au poste d'ailier.
Patineur toujours en mouvement, très vif tant dans sa première foulée et son accélération que dans sa vitesse de pointe. Il sait éliminer les défenseurs quand il est lancé. Fort du bas du corps avec un excellent équilibre.
Créateur de jeu exceptionnel qui contrôle le palet et crée des espaces pour ses coéquipiers. Plus passeur que buteur, il a néanmoins un tir précis et rapide quand il le décoche. Intelligence de jeu très élevée. Transitions offensives extrêmement bonnes. Solide et créatif dans les trois zones de la glace. Les recruteurs ont comparé son style de jeu à Patrice Bergeron.
