Nico Brunner

Brunner, Nico

Position : D

17-09-1992 Villach, AUT

Youth team / club formateur : Villacher SV

Nephew of Engelbert Linder. His twin sister Nina Brunner also played with Austrian (women) national team.
Initially a forward. Austrian junior champion 2011 and 2012.
He struggled to find a spot in Villach first team. He played only six games in 2012/13 as a forward because the roster was full.
Coach Hannu Järvenpää had the idea to convert him into a defenceman and he became a third-pair mainstay in 2013/14.
Brunner's strength is his ability to pass the puck in the air to his forwards even under pressure.
Though he has average size (180 cm and 78 kg) he has always been used in penalty killing.
Debuted with Austria national team vs South Korea on November 5, 2015.
After he played his first elite World Championships at 29 he left his home club VSV to play for Vienna.
