Dangerous scorer. Had a stellar college career, setting several records for Harvard. Both Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens tried to sign him, but he declined.
Formed a dangerous line at the 1960 Olympics together with brother Bob Cleary and Bob McVey.
Went on to sell insurance but soon became a successful hockey coach in college for many years.
Inducted into the US and IIHF Hockey Hall of Fame.

Buteur prolifique, si prometteur lors de ses années universitaires à Harvard (il y détient plusieurs records) que les Bruins et les Canadiens tentèrent immédiatement de l'attirer. Sans succès.
Participa aux Jeux olympiques de 1960 sur une redoutable ligne qu'il formait avec son frère Bob et un autre Bob, McVey.
Courtier en assurance dans le civil, il fut aussi et surtout un entraîneur universitaire de renom.
Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey américain et de l'IIHF.
