Discovered in the late 1960s by Mihai Flamaropol, a former Romanian national team player after whom Bucharest's main rink is named after.
For many years he played on Romania's top line together with Dumitru Axinte and Doru Tureanu. Costea handled the defensive duties on the line and developed into a solid two-way player. Became a businessman, but also worked as a hockey coach.
Suffered a stroke at 71 and was in intensive care during 70 days until his death.

Repéré dans son adolescence par Mihai Flamaropol, légende du hockey roumain qui a donné son nom à la patinoire principale de Bucarest.
Il a formé pendant de nombreuses années la meilleure ligne offensive de l'équipe nationale roumaine aux côtés de Dumitru Axinte et Doru Tureanu. C'était l'homme de l'ombre du trio, dont il assurait les tâches défensives. Il s'est reconverti dans les affaires tout en occupant des fonctions d'entraîneur. Il a fondé l'ASC Viitorul, club établi à Otopeni en banlieue nord de Bucarest.
Décédé à 71 ans après avoir passé 70 jours en soins intensifs à la suite d'un AVC.
