His mother graduated from a sports high school and practiced heptathlon. His father Antons, a truck driver, tried biathlon.
The family grew up in small Aiviekste village (384 people). The older daughter Zita studied in a music school. The younger daughter Rita played in Latvia football national team.
The three sons all played hockey on the river, then on a proper natural rink which was built with boards and lightning.
Only when Guntis was 12 hockey coach Gints Bikars noticed his talent and convinced him to go to play hockey in Riga.
Went through all Latvian national teams and played two seasons in Slovakia. 2009 Continental Cup winner with MHC Martin.
He had to quit professional hockey at only 24 because of cardiac arrhythmia. He went on playing floorball and amateur hockey.
In the same time his younger brother Andris Džeriņš started his own professional career.
Guntis became a firefighter in small town Pļaviņas. Declined coaching jobs in Riga because he prefered to raise his children in the countryside.

Sa mère, diplômée d'un lycée sportif, a pratiqué l'athlétisme, notamment l'heptathlon. Son père Antons, chauffeur routier, s'est essayé au biathlon.
La famille a grandi dans le petit village d'Aiviekste entouré de forêts (384 habitants).
La fille aîné Zita a fait une école de musique. La fille cadette Rita est devenu footballeuse et a joué en équipe nationale.
Les trois fils ont tous joué au hockey sur glace, d'abord sur la rivière puis sur une vraie patinoire aménagée en plein air avec balustrades et éclairage.
Ce n'est que quand Guntis avait 12 ans que l'entraîneur Gints Bikars a remarqué son talent et l'a convaincu d'aller étudier et jouer à Riga.
Il a joué deux saisons en Slovaquie. Vainqueur de la Coupe Continentale 2009 avec le MHC Martin.
Il a dû arrêter le hockey professionnel à seulement 24 ans en raison de problèmes d'arythmie cardiaque. Il a continué à jouer au floorball et au hockey amateur.
Il a passé le témoin à son jeune frère Andris Džeriņš qui a commencé sa carrière pro au même moment.
Guntis a suivi une formation de sécurité incendie et est devenu pompier dans la petite ville de Pļaviņas. Il a refusé des postes d'entraîneur à Riga parce qu'il préfère élever son fils et sa fille à la campagne que dans la capitale.
