Very dynamic and nimble skater. Good stickhandling and playmaking abilities. Average shot accuracy. Tendency to keep the puck too much.
His father Vladimirs Golovkovs was a World junior champion in 1979 and 1980 with the USSR. He became a coach, most notably for Latvia women national team.
Georgs took part to Latvia training camp before 2014 WC when he played with Dinamo Riga but got a shoulder injury the next summer and was a bit forgotten in his country while getting a top-6 role with small clubs (in Great Britain, in Denmark and in Swedish lower divisions).
National team coach Harijs Vītoliņš confessed he had never seen play before Golovkovs strong national team comeback with a hat-trick vs Norway in November 2022. He was cut from th roster before World Championships in Riga but was recalled after Andris Džeriņš injury and could win a historic bronze medal for Latvia.

Patineur très dynamique et agile, doté d'une bonne technique de crosse et capable de donner des passes parfaites. Sa précision de tir est assez moyenne. Il a aussi tendance à un peu trop garder le palet.
Son père Vladimirs Golovkovs, champion du monde junior 1979 et 1980 avec l'URSS, est devenu entraîneur, notamment de l'équipe nationale féminine de Lettonie.
Georgs a pris part au camp de préparation de la Lettonie avant le Mondial 2014 alors qu'il jouait au Dinamo Riga mais s'est blessé à l'épaule l'été suivant et a été un peu oublié dans son pays alors qu'il brillait dans un rôle offensif pour de petits clubs (en Grande-Bretagne, au Danemark et dans les divisions inférieures suédoises).
L'entraîneur national Harijs Vītoliņš a avoué ne l'avoir jamais vu jouer avant qu'il ne fasse un retour tonitruant en sélection avec un hat-trick contre la Norvège en November 2022. Il a été retranché avant le championnat du monde de Riga mais a été rappelé après la blessure d'Andris Džeriņš. Même s'il n'a pas participé au dernier match en raison de problèmes de dos, il a donc pu passer autour de son cou la médaille de bronze historique de la Lettonie.
