His parents moved to Weißwasser in 1938 and he was born one year later there. Recruited at 9 after a tryout on a local lake. He always played as a netminder, excepted during one season as a forward.
Known to have played with a black face mask. Represented East Germany 118 times.
After the 1970 World Championships he was told that he was too old and not longer needed on the national team. Coached the East German national team between 1971-76.
Eleven-time East German champion as a player and three-time East German champion as a coach.
Inducted into the German Hockey Hall of Fame.
The black mask goaltender remained Weißwasser sports idol after his career. On 2023, one year after his death, "Klausi" was the first choice by far in a poll among fans to chose the club mascot's name.

Ses parents s'installèrent à Weißwasser en 1938, soit un an avant sa naissance, ce qui a sans doute dicté son destin de hockeyeur. Il fut repéré à 9 ans lors d'une séance d'essai sur un lac. Il a joué toute sa carrière comme gardien, sauf une année en attaque.
Son masque couvrant tout noir le rendit célèbre. 118 sélections avec l'Allemagne de l'Est.
Après les Mondiaux 1970, alors qu'il n'était même pas âgé de 31 ans, on lui fit aimablement comprendre qu'il était trop vieux pour l'équipe nationale. Pas rancunier, il est devenu entraîneur de la sélection entre 1971 et 1976.
Onze titres de champion de RDA comme joueur, plus trois comme entraîneur, tous pour Weißwasser, dont il fut ensuite entraîneur de jeunes et dirigeant.
Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey allemand.
Il est resté un des sportifs les plus populaires de Weißwasser. Un an après sa mort, quand un sondage a cherché un nom pour la mascotte du club - un renard - qui n'en avait pas, c'est "Klausi" qui est arrivé loin en tête, en hommage assumé à Hirche.
