Made his debut in the German league 1958/59. Regarded as the best German left wing of his generation. Strong skater with an accurate shot. Mentally strong player who had a good attitude towards the game.
Won eight league titles and scored 568 points (361+207) in 530 games before retiring in 1986. Represented Germany 154 times (83 goals). Was a Pool B World Championship All-Star in 1970. Father of Ernst Köpf Jr.
Played recreative hockey twice a week until the age of 75. Then he "only" went to the fitness room, and also to golf, mainly with old teammate Ernst Trautwein.
Inducted into the German Hockey Hall of Fame.

Cet ailier gauche qui débuta en championnat d'Allemagne à 18 ans avec Füssen est considéré comme le meilleur Allemand de sa génération à son poste. Superbe patineur, tireur précis, très résistant mentalement, il ne se départissait jamais d'un rafraîchissant enthousiasme pour le jeu.
Huit fois champion d'Allemagne, il inscrivit 568 points (361+207) en 530 matches et disputa le dernier en 1986, à 46 ans, soit 28 ans de carrière. 154 sélections en équipe de RFA, 83 buts et, au passage, une élection en tant que meilleur joueur du Mondial B 1970 et une une médaille de bronze olympique en 1976. Son fils Ernst Köpf junior est aussi hockeyeur international.
Il a joué au hockey loisir deux fois par semaine jusqu'à 75 ans. Ensuite il s'est contenté d'aller à la salle de sports et de faire du golf, notamment avec son vieux complice Ernst Trautwein.
Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey allemand.
