Reiner (or "Rainer") Kossmann was born in Ortelsburg (Szczytno in Polish), Germany (Poland from 1945). In 1942 he became a German school champion after the final tournament held in Prague, scoring the winning goal against Bavaria.
This great skater played together with his younger brothers Jochen and Johannes in SC Charlottenburg, Grün Weiss Pankow and BSG Empor Berlin between 1948-52. He then played briefly for Berliner SC, before playing for Krefeld until his retirement.
He debuted for the East German national team in 1951 against the Soviet Union. Represented West Germany/Germany 16 times (3 goals).
When he came to Krefeld in 1952, he went on to work for the German steel plant DEW (Deutsche Edelstahlwerke Aktiengesellschaft), which was a merger of several stainless steel plants, and the largest European stainless steel producer who at one time had 15,000 employees. In 1958 he was promoted and became the managing director of their Chilean subsidiary in Santiago, Chile.
His son, Chilean-born Hans Kossmann, represented Chile in alpine skiing at the 1984 Winter Olympics, competing in three different disciplines. Men’s downhill (42nd), Men’s giant slalom (DNF) and Men’s slalom (21st).
In 1975 Reiner Kossmann filed for partnership in an Uruguayan import and export business.

Reiner (ou "Rainer") Kossmann est né dans l'actuelle Pologne, à Szczytno (Ortelsburg, ville allemande à l'époque). À 15 ans, pendant la guerre, il fut sacré champion allemand de hockey sur glace dans la catégorie d'âge "Schüler" lors d'un tournoi final disputé à Prague. C'est lui qui inscrivit le but décisif lors du dernier match contre la Bavière.
Entre 1948 et 1952, cet excellent patineur jouera en senior au SC Charlottenburg, au Grün-Weiss Pankow et au BSG Empor Berlin avec ses frères Jochen et Johannes. Rejoindra ensuite brièvement le Berliner SC avant de passer tout le restant de sa carrière aux Preussen Krefeld.
16 sélections et 3 buts pour les équipes d'Allemagne de l'Ouest, mais il connut son premier match international en 1951 avec l'Allemagne de l'Est contre l'URSS.
À son arrivée à Krefeld en 1952, il travaille pour l'entreprise sidérurgique DEW (Deutsche Edelstahlwerke Aktiengesellschaft), une fusion de plusieurs usines qui a formé le plus grand producteur européen d'acier inoxydable avec 15 000 employés. En 1958 il est promu au poste de directeur de leur filiale à Santiago du Chili.
Son fils né sur place, Hans Kossmann, a représenté le Chili en ski alpin aux Jeux olympiques d'hiver 1984 Winter Olympics, en descente (42e), slalom géant (abandon) et slalom (21e).
En 1975 Reiner Kossmann est devenu partenaire d'une société uruguayenne d'import-export.
