Started on the Hofteich, Frankenhausen frozen lake in the north of Frankenhausen Crimmitschau. Children had to clean the ice when a gritting truck drove on the highway bridge above their heads. They dig a hole in the ice before the night to get a perfect frozen surface the next day.
Talented player who was highly touted as a junior and who had a permanent spot on the East German national team in the 1960s (20 goals and 6 assists in 109 games). Had to retire from competitive hockey in 1970, the year state support ended. He was forced to get back to his carpenter job but still played and trained children for BSG Einheit Crimmitschau.
Founding member and playing trainer for ETC Crimmitschau in the lower Bayernliga 1990/91 at the age of 51 after German reunification. The following season he coached them to a promotion from the Bayernliga (Div.5).
Inducted into the German Hockey Hall of Fame.

Il débute sur le Hofteich, le lac gelé de Frankenhausen situé en dessous d'un pont autoroutier au nord de Crimmitschau. Les enfants doivent nettoyer la glace quand une saleuse passe au-dessus de leurs têtes, et ils creusent un trou le soir pour qu'une surface de jeu lisse gèle pendant la nuit.
Triple champion d'Allemagne de l'Est de 1951 à 1953 dans la catégorie d'âge "Pionniers" avec l'équipe scolaire de Frankenhausen. Talent appelé en équipe nationale junior en 1957.
20 buts et 6 assists en 109 sélections pour la RDA. Obligé d'arrêter le hockey de haut niveau à 31 ans, en 1970, au moment où l'État retire son soutien, alors qu'il avait commencé une formation d'entraîneur. Il doit revenir à son métier initial de menuisier mais continue de jouer et d'entraîner des jeunes en bénévole pour le BSG Einheit Crimmitschau.
Après la réunification, on le retrouve dans la Bayernliga 1990-1991 en tant que membre fondateur et entraîneur-joueur de l'ETC Crimmitschau, à 51 ans ! La saison suivante, il obtient la montée du club vers le quatrième échelon national. Il entraîne jusqu'à presque 70 ans.
Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey allemand.
