Born and raised in Canada. Got his first skates from his mother at the age of nine. He almost became a goaltender but eventually settled down as a defenseman. Established himself as a reliable blueliner who played a safe and sound game in his own zone.
Came to Mannheim in 1978 and went on to play 19 seasons there. Represented West Germany/Germany 180 times.
Retired as a player in 1997 after his second German championship title (as Mannheim captain) and became a hockey coach later on. Known for for his defensive structure and for his good communication skills. His hockey drills were had bands' or musicians' names.
Inducted into the German Hockey Hall of Fame. His number 3 has been retired by Mannheim.
He was named as Germany head coach in 2023 and led the team to an historic silver medal in his first World Championship.

Enfant du Canada où il apprend à patiner avec sa mère à neuf ans, il fut tenté par le poste de gardien avant d'opter pour la ligne bleue. Il y présentera un profil défensif, fiable et sérieux dans sa zone.
C'est son grand-père qui découvre dans le journal l'annonce de Heinz Weisenbach cherchant des hockeyeurs ayant la nationalité allemande (voir histoire de Mannheim). Celui-ci lui propose un contrat sans même l'avoir vu patiner, il part à 19 ans en Allemagne où il accumulera 180 sélections en équipe nationale.
Devenu un entraîneur renommé en Allemagne et en Suisse après sa retraite de joueur en 1997, sur son second titre avec Mannheim, comme capitaine. Réputé pour la structure défensive de son jeu et pour sa communication calme et claire. Il nomme ses exercices en référence à des musiciens ou groupes ("Bob Marley" est un "2 contre 1").
Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey allemand. Son numéro 3 a été retiré par Mannheim.
En 2023 il est nommé aux commandes de l'équipe d'Allemagne et la conduit aussitôt à une finale historique de championnat du monde.
