His father was a Lithuanian and the family name was originally Kuchauskas. The father worked as a director at Krylia Sovetov, so it was natural for young Alfred to begin playing for the club. At first he formed a line with Anatoli Kostryukhov and Nikolai Kotov as a forward, but a shortage of defenders ment that he was shifted to defense with Kostryukhov.
He had good on-ice vision and was good at starting attacks. One of the first domestic players to master high shots, which became a valuable weapon in his arsenal, especially on powerplays. Calm under pressure and a calculating playmaker. Three-time league All-Star (1953, 1954 and 1960). Played 240 league games, scoring 37 goals. Represented Soviet Union 51 times (7 goals).
Retired in 1961 and organized one of the first sport lotteries (sportloto) in the country. Also worked as a referee for a while. Then ran a hockey school. Organized veteran games in later years. Was always devoted to Krylia, and even two strokes didn’t keep him from attending their games.
Inducted into the Russian Hockey Hall of Fame.

De son vrai nom Kuchauskas hérité d'un père lituanien dirigeant des Krylia Sovietov, Alfred débute donc chez les Ailes soviétiques où on l'aligne d'emblée en attaque avec Nikolai Kotov et Anatoli Kostryukhov. Un manque de défenseurs invite ses entraîneurs à le faire reculer en compagnie de Kostryukhov et le déclic se produit.
Kuchevsky, grâce à sa vision du jeu, sera un excellent relanceur et un des tout premiers Soviétiques à pratiquer les lancers hauts, ce qui en fera un adversaire redouté, surtout en avantage numérique. Calme, tranquille, imperméable à la pression et maître-stratège. Trois fois dans l'équipe-type du championnat soviétique (1953, 1954 et 1960). 240 matches de championnat, 37 buts, 51 sélections pour l'URSS, 7 buts.
Une fois les patins pendus en 1961, il organise une des premières loteries sportives du pays (le sportloto), arbitre quelques rencontres de hockey et dirige une école de hockey. Très actif dans le hockey vétéran une fois l'âge venu. Ne reniera jamais son attachant aux KS, se montrant présent dans les tribunes même après deux accidents cardiovasculaires.
Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey russe.
