A small defenseman at 5’7” (170cm) who was a good skater.
His father Harry Lempio, an East Prussian refugee born in Goldap (now Poland), was an Olympic boxer in 1960.
He trained in Berlin at that time. On his way to kindergarten, the young Joachim walked past the ice rink.
Won twelve league titles with SC Dynamo Berlin. Represented East Germany 220 times ans scored 57 points (22+35).
After reunification he joined EC in Hannover and played with them until their DEL year in 1994/95 (before a bankrupcy).
Studied economics during his career. Later he worked in an Hannover bank (Sparkasse).
Inducted into the German Hockey Hall of Fame. His number 3 has been retired in Hannover.

Petit défenseur d'1m70 qui était un bon patineur.
Son père Harry Lempio, un réfugié de Prusse orientale né à Goldap (aujourd'hui en Pologne), fut boxeur olympique en 1960.
Il s'entraînait alors au centre national de Berlin et vivait dans le quartier de Hohenschönhausen.
Sur le chemin de l'école maternelle, le petit Joachim longeait tous les matins la patinoire dans laquelle il ferait carrière comme hockeyeur.
Douze titres de champion de RDA avec le SC Dynamo Berlin. 220 sélections pour l'Allemagne de l'Est, 57 points (22+35).
Après la réunification, il a rejoint le EC Hanovre et a accompagné ce club jusqu'à sa saison en DEL en 1994/95 (avant la faillite).
Il a étudié l'économie pendant sa carrière et a travaillé par la suite dans une banque de Hanovre (la Sparkasse).
Intronisé au Hall of Fame du hockey allemand. Son numéro 3 a été retiré par le club de Hanovre.
