His father David was drafted by the Chicago Black Hawks in 1984 and played 126 NHL games between 1987/88 and 1993/94.
Connor Mackey on the other hand went undrafted. In 2017 Mackey was invited to and attended the Calgary Flames' 2017 summer prospect development camp. The following year it was Buffalo Sabres who invited him to their annual development camp.
In 2020 Mackey had a solid college career behind him and was still unaffiliated with any professional club. By that time he was a coveted undrafted free agent and attracted interest from 28 of the NHL's 31 teams. On March 20, 2020, Mackey signed a one-year, entry-level contract with the Calgary Flames to take effect at the start of the 2020–21 NHL season.
Solid all-around defenseman with a projectable frame and excellent puck-moving ability. Not afraid to join the rush and contribute offensively. Solid at defending his position. Regarded as a low-maintenance blueliner. Able to log a lot of minutes in all game situations. Adding more bulk to his frame and getting physically stronger for the NHLwere his main priorities when he entered the league as a rookie.

Connor Mackey n'a en revanche pas été drafté. Il a tout de même été invité aux camps de développement de Calgary et de Buffalo en 2017 et 2018.
En 2020, après une solide carrière universitaire, Mackey était un agent libre convoité qui attirait l'intérêt de 28 des 31 équipes de NHL. Le 20 mars 2020, il a signé un contrat d'un an avec les Flames de Calgary.
Défenseur complet avec un gabarit mobile et d'excellentes capacités pour faire vivre le palet. Il n'a pas peur de se joindre à l'attaque et de contribuer offensivement. Solide pour défendre sa position. Défenseur de confiance, capable de jouer beaucoup de minutes dans toutes les situations de match. Ajouter un peu de muscle et de force physique étaient ses priorités à son entrée dans la NHL.
