Son of Moe Mantha Sr. [1933-2015] who had a long professional hockey career.
Mantha Jr. was born in Ohio when his father played there for Cleveland Barons (AHL).
Offensive-minded defenseman in his earlier years.
Used his mobility to get involved in his team’s offense, often carrying the puck into the attacking zone himself.
He was a good skater and fine passer. Had a hard shot and was often used on the powerplay.
Good leader in the dressing room.
In October 1991 he was placed on waivers by Winnipeg. He cleared waivers but was both disappointed and angry at the organization for putting him in that position.
After that he made a decision to join USA for the 1992 Olympics.
He asked for being traded from Winnipeg and was dealt to Philadelphia. On September 29, 1992 he was released by Philadelphia and chose to retire instead.
He became a hockey coach. In 2005 Mantha was at the center of a major controversy that left him suspended by the OHL for a full year as a GM and for 40 games as a coach.
The dual suspensions stemmed allowing his own players to beat on each other in practice, and for forcing his players to strip and stand in a lavatory at the back of the team bus as part of a hazing ritual.
His nephew Ryan was drafted in the NHL 2014.

Fils de Moe Mantha Sr. [1933-2015] qui a connu une longue carrière dans le hockey professionel.
Mantha Jr. est né dans l'Ohio où son père jouait pour les Barons de Cleveland (AHL).
Défenseur offensif dans les premières années. Bon patineur et passeur. Lourd lancer bien utile en supériorité.
Il utilisait sa mobilité aux services de l'offensive, conduisant souvent lui-même le palet dans la zone.
Un leader dans le vestiaire.
Quand Winnipeg l'a placé au ballotage en octobre 1991, et même s'il en est sorti, il fut déçu et en colère après l'organisation.
Il prit alors la décision de rejoindre la sélection américaine pour les Jeux de 1992.
Il a ensuite demandé à être échangé de Winnipeg et a été échangé à Philadelphie... qui l'a retranché le 29 septembre 1992.
Il décida de prendre sa retraite et devint entraîneur de hockey.
En 2005 Mantha a été au centre d'une controverse majeure qui lui valu une suspension d'un an en OHL comme manager général et de 40 matchs en tant qu'entraîneur.
Cette double suspension tint au fait qu'il autorisait ses joueurs à se battre entre eux à l'entraînement, et qu'il les forcait à se déshabiller et à se tenir debout sur les toilettes du bus de l'équipe, pour bizutage.
Son neveu Ryan fut drafté NHL en 2014.
370 points (81+289) en 656 parties de saison régulière dans la NHL.
