His parents emigrated from Croatia and settled down in the small mining town of Eveleth. He was the tenth of eleven children.
One of the best university players of all-time, winning 69 straight games. 298 points in 111 university games.
Rangy and rawboned player who added muscle and hustle to all the teams he played for.
Described as one of the smartest players of his time and a "velvety-smooth skater".
Had strong wrists and liked to use his dangerous slapshot. Also had one of the best backhand shots in university hockey.
Credited his former coach and NHL-player Doc Romnes for refining his puck-handling skills.
Centered a line with Bill Cleary and John Matchefts at the 1956 Winter Olympics. Captain for USA in 1962 and 1966.
Shifted to defense in later years. Voted as the best defenseman at the 1962 World Championships.
Retired in 1971. Went on to become an executive with a Twin Cities radio and television station.
Inducted into the US and IIHF Hockey Hall of Fame.

Ses poignets étaient solides et il aimait utiliser son dangereux slap. Il possédait également un des meilleurs revers du hockey universitaire.
Il dit avoir progressé dans le maniement du palet grâce à son entraîneur, l'ancien joueur de NHL Doc Romnes.
Centre d'une ligne avec Bill Cleary et John Matchefts durant les Jeux de 1956. Capitaine des États-Unis en 1962 et 1966.
Passé en défense en fin de carrière. Désigné meilleur défenseur des Mondiaux de 1962.
Retraité en 1971, il est devenu cadre au sein d'une station de radio et de télévision de Minneapolis / Saint-Paul.
Intronisé aux temples de la renommée du hockey américain et de l'IIHF.
