McBain was a child superstar, always wearing No. 9, and captaining the Toronto Young Nats. He won the Quebec City Peewee tournament, scoring two goals in the championship game.
McBain continued his strong play as a junior with Aurora, Niagara Falls and North Bay. This made him a first round draft pick in the NHL in 1983.
In 1983 he turned down an offer to join Team Canada's 1984 Olympic team so that he could sign with the Winnipeg Jets prior to 1983/84 season.
At first he was used in the NHL as a checker and penalty killer.
In 1987/88 and 1988/89 he was used on the powerplay and on Winnipeg first line along with Dale Hawerchuk and scored more than half of his NHL career goals during these two years.
He also was called into Team Canada for the World Championships, and scored four goals vs Poland, again while playing on Hawerchuk line. He scored only one other goal (the goal vs Soviet Union was actually scored by Dineen).
In the next summer he was traded to Pittsburgh and quickly relegated to third and fourth line duty for the rest of his career.
Hampered by injuries his entire playing career, including a few serious knee injuries. Retired in 1996. Father of Jack McBain.

Enfant, McBain était une superstar, toujours floqué du n°9, et capitaine des Toronto Young Nats. Il a remporté le tournoi international peewee de Québec, en marquant deux buts en finale.
McBain continua à briller en junior avec Aurora, Niagara Falls et North Bay. Cela lui valut une sélection au premier tour de la draft NHL 1983.
Il refusa une sélection pour la Team Canada qui prépara les JO 1984 pour rejoindre les Jets de Winnipeg dès la saison 1983/84.
Il fut d'abord utilisé en NHL dans un rôle défensif et en infériorité numérique.
En 1987/88 et 1988/89 il fut utilisé en supériorité numérique et sur la première ligne de Winnipeg aux côtés de Dale Hawerchuk et a marqué plus de la moitié des buts de sa carrière NHL pendant ces deux saisons.
Il fut aussi sélectionné pour le Canada aux championnats du monde et marqua quatre buts contre la Pologne, encore sur la ligne de Hawerchuk. Il n'inscrivit qu'un autre but dans le reste du tournoi (le but attribué contre l'URSS a en fait été marqué par Dineen).
L'été suivant, il fut échangé à Pittsburgh et relégué en troisième ou quatrième ligne pour le reste de sa carrière.
Malheureusement il fut constamment freiné par des blessures, notamment plusieurs graves blessures au genou.
301 points (129+172) en 608 parties de saison régulière dans la NHL. Retraité en 1996. Père de Jack McBain.
