Played for Medford High School and then for Boston College, graduating from there in 1962.
Became a coach of Xaverian High in 1972.
His relative, Justin "Jerry" McCarthy represented USA at the 1924 Olympics.

Ses parents sont nés à Charlestown (Massachussets), comme lui, mais la famille déménagea à Boston quand il était enfant.
Il joua pour le lycée Medford puis le Boston College, d'où il sorti diplômé en 1962.
Il est devenu entraîneur au lycée Xaverian en 1972.
Un membre de sa famille, Justin "Jerry" McCarthy fut international américain à l'occasion des Jeux de 1924.
